Benefits for Student Who join
- Students get hands on knowledge of how to research design and construct a canoe out of concrete.
- Students will meet upper classman and create a strong bond between then and the civil engineering community
- If students chose to get really evolved they will meet a lot of professors and develop relationship that extend out side the classroom setting.
- As stated above this is working hands on with raw materials, concrete, reinforcement, fiber glass. A lot of these materials are the same type that engineers will work with on a day to day basis in the field.
The gist on what The Concrete Canoe is all about
There are a few stages that student may or may not participate in. first step is to find a captain or captains. Next they will develop two main teams to start. The haul design team and the mix design team. The haul design team will meet on average once a week and hammer out a design in the fist month of the semester. The mix team has a little more time they will be developing mixes testing them changing key elements, making more mixes testing them. Each year there are changes to the rules that will make it necessary to alter the mix in some way. After we have the haul design and the mix design the captain/s will order all the supplies to make the form/s and bulk supplies for the pore it self. Next is the fun part pore day/s. Usually this takes a long time the canoe takes usually 3 layers and renforcement between each. On this day the cylinders and renforcment sceam presentation are pored also. After a week of curing we flip the canoe over and pop out the form and pore the bulk heads if necessary. Then we seal and add all the finishing touches for esthetics.
